Watching for early signs can save your pet from a lot of pain down the road. Discomfort while chewing, trouble swallowing, or pawing at the mouth can all signal periodontal disease, along with bad breath and inflamed or bleeding gums. Comprehensive Pet Dental Care

Edmonton West Animal Hospital provides comprehensive dental care, from routine cleanings to extractions when necessary. We use dental X-ray imaging to fully assess your pet's oral health, including issues below the gumline that aren't visible during a physical exam.

Because pets can't stay still for a thorough cleaning, anesthesia is required. Before your appointment, you'll complete our Dental Consent Webform, and your pet will receive a physical exam and pre-anesthetic bloodwork to check for any risk factors. Anesthesia is tailored to your pet's individual health profile based on those results. If a more advanced procedure is needed, we'll refer you to a veterinary dental specialist.

The Cleaning Process

Your pet's cleaning includes scaling to remove plaque and tartar, both above and below the gumline, along with probing to check for signs of periodontal disease beneath the gums. Once cleaning is complete, we polish the teeth to a smooth finish, which helps slow future tartar buildup.

At-Home Care

At-home care makes a real difference between visits. We recommend regular brushing along with dental-friendly treats and food, and we can provide a dental antiseptic to help keep gum infection under control between cleanings.
