Canine distemper is a serious, highly contagious viral disease that affects domestic dogs as well as several wildlife species, including raccoons, wolves, foxes, and skunks. There's no cure for it, which makes prevention through vaccination the most important tool owners have. Young, unvaccinated puppies are especially vulnerable. The virus belongs to the Morbillivirus family, the same family as the human measles virus.
The virus is shed in an infected animal's eye and nose secretions, as well as in urine and feces. It spreads through the air, through direct contact with an infected animal, or indirectly via shared items like bedding, bowls, or toys.
The incubation period - the time between exposure and visible symptoms - is typically 1 to 2 weeks, though it can stretch to 4 to 5 weeks in some cases. A fever, however, can show up as early as 3 to 6 days after infection. The virus initially targets the tonsils and lymph nodes, replicating there for about a week before spreading to the nervous, respiratory, urogenital, and gastrointestinal systems.
Early signs include a fever above 103.5°F (39.7°C), red, watery eyes, and nasal discharge. As the disease progresses, dogs often become lethargic and lose their appetite, followed by coughing, vomiting, and diarrhea. In severe cases, once the virus reaches the central nervous system, dogs may develop seizures, muscle twitching, or paralysis.
Some strains cause a thickening of the foot pads (and sometimes the nose) known as hyperkeratosis, which is where distemper gets its old nickname, "hard pad disease."
In dogs with weak or compromised immune systems, distemper can be fatal within 2 to 5 weeks of infection.
The most common route of infection is contact with an infected animal or a contaminated environment - bedding, bowls, or toys included - which is why unvaccinated dogs face the greatest risk. A bacterial infection in the respiratory or gastrointestinal tract can also make a dog more vulnerable. Improperly attenuated live vaccines can, in rare cases, transmit the disease, though this is uncommon.
Diagnosing distemper typically involves bloodwork and urinalysis, which may reveal lymphopenia - a drop in the white blood cells responsible for immune defense. Modern veterinary practice increasingly relies on PCR testing (detecting the virus's genetic material) as a key diagnostic tool. Blood serology can detect antibodies produced in response to the virus, though this test can't distinguish between antibodies from vaccination versus actual infection. Viral proteins may also be detectable in urine or vaginal samples, and skin, nasal mucus, or foot pad tissue can be tested as well.
If pneumonia is suspected, X-rays may be used, and CT or MRI scans can help identify any brain involvement.
There's no cure for canine distemper and no antiviral medication that treats it directly, so treatment focuses on supporting the dog through the illness. This can include IV fluids for dogs who become dehydrated or aren't eating, regular cleaning of eye and nose discharge, antibiotics to manage secondary bacterial infections, and medications like phenobarbital or potassium bromide to control seizures. Dogs with neurological symptoms need close monitoring throughout treatment.
A dog's outlook after a distemper diagnosis depends on the specific strain and the strength of their immune system. Recovery is possible, though seizures and other serious neurological complications can still emerge 2 to 3 months after a dog otherwise seems to have recovered.
Recovered dogs commonly continue shedding the virus for around a month, and in some cases - especially dogs who had neurological symptoms - shedding can persist for several months. Keep recovered dogs away from unvaccinated or immunocompromised dogs until a veterinarian confirms, ideally through PCR testing, that they're no longer shedding the virus.
Routine vaccination is the single most effective way to prevent canine distemper, and immediate isolation from infected animals is essential if an outbreak is nearby. Newborn puppies have underdeveloped immune systems, making early protection especially important.
The virus itself doesn't survive long outside a host - just a few hours at room temperature - and it is easily destroyed with routine cleaning, disinfectants, or drying. That said, it can persist for weeks in cool, shaded environments at temperatures near freezing, and it can survive even longer within serum or tissue debris.
